Learners GuideHere's what to expect when you start your driving lessons. This is a typical instructor process, your progress will depend on experience and general aptitude. Not all instructors use the same process. Stage 1. Moving off and Stopping You will learn to stop the car using foot brakes and hand brakes. You will also learn to use mirrors, knowing where blind spots are, using indicators, signalling and controlling the car with steering, gears, clutch and brakes. Stage 2. Junctions Mirror, signal, manoeuvre, the key elements to successfully negotiating junctions. This process can take some time to understand and confidently put into practice. Your safety, your passengers and all other road user safety is the most important aspect to successful driving. Stage 3. Emerging Another key element in successful driving is learning how to join other drivers on any road when changing lane, direction or negotiating a junction. Stage 4. Meeting Traffic Meeting traffic on the road can be complex and difficult to negotiate. A clear understanding of safe procedures is vital if the learner driver is to progress to full licence holder. Stage 5. Emergency Stop In every driving test the learner will be required to perform an emergency stop. The safe execution of an emergency stop is a vital part of the driving test and might have to be performed on a wet road or other difficult conditions. Stage 6. Pedestrian Crossing Understanding and replicating the approved process includes: awareness, knowing the position of other vehicles and rules on when to stop and when it is safe to proceed. Stage 7. Awareness and Planning The on-going, constant process of driving safely whilst making correct decisions is key to good driving. Understanding and following the rules at all times is also central to becoming a good, safe and experienced driver. Stage 8. Progress on Main Roads Successful safe driving requires constant attention and full concentration. The learner needs to fully understand how to perform all kinds of manoeuvre, from safely starting and moving away to stopping quickly or slowly depending on the situation and other parties using the roads and walkways. All drivers must complete and pass the theory test. This is a separate part of the test, more information is available from DVLA |
